This section will be an ongoing project. It will have images of my bowls that are for sale, and some pictures of how I transform the tree log into a finished bowl.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

In 2007 we experienced a devastating ice storm that destroyed thousands of trees and left our city without power for up to 2 weeks. Here are some images of that event. From that event I was able to salvage some trees from the burn pile, and make some bowls.

#2017 – 420 is a spalted red oak platter with dark streaking through half of the piece. The streaking was caused by an iron object embedded in the tree as it grew and the iron reacted with the tannins of the tree to leave the dark gray colour. #2017 – 636 is a walnut “finger bowl”, named from the coves that have been cut surrounding the outside wall of the bowl. These coves provide a gripping surface for your fingers when you pick up the piece. This bowl measures 15 1/4″ dia. x 5 3/8″ tall and has a high tactile quality along with a myriad of swirls in the grain. $200.00 USD + S&H.

 

 

 

 

 

 

#2017 – 601 is a persimmon bowl that retains some of its bark layer on opposite sides of the rim. The peaked rim is a result of the drying process of the wood. Most times the rims are worked down to be flat, but some times I prefer to keep the changes in place. Measuring 8 3/4″ dia. x 2 1/2″ tall it is $60.00 USD + S&H.

#2021 -924/925/926 is a 3 piece set of maple bowls. The middle and small bowls were cored from the main bowl. The bowls are 12 1/4″ x 4″, 8 3/4″ x 2 1/2″ and 6″ x 1 1/4″. The photo on the left shows some of the rim of the middle bowl missing. That is where the bark inclusion was passing through the wood. This stunning 3 piece set is $250.00 USD + S&H.

 

#2021 – 1217 is an ash and walnut round bottom bowl. The ash had a severe defect in it, and was corrected with removing the defect and filling the gap with walnut. Contrasting colour and the grain of the ash with some red accents makes an interesting piece. This is 8″ x 1 3/8″ and is $50.00 USD + S&H. f

 

#2021 – 871 is a maple and walnut bowl. The maple bowl had a severe defect in it. The defect was removed and the space filled with a piece of walnut leaving this attractive piece. There are a few red accents in the maple. This piece is 12 1/8″ x 3 3/4″ and is $125.00 USD + S&H. f

 

#2021 – 1165 is an ash and walnut bowl. The ash had a severe defect in it. The defect was removed and a piece of walnut was inserted to fill the gap. There are a few blue accents in the ash. Combine the stark difference of the ash and walnut with the flowing grain in the ash this is a dramatic piece. It is 16 1/4″ x 3 3/4″ and is $200.00 USD + S&H. f
