Past Treasures

This section will show the pieces that have been acquired by others and added to their own collection of treasures. I do this so that the new owner can verify their purchase, and also to serve as a reference of past work. Perhaps an idea in one piece can be combined with another shape or species of wood. This will also show an evolution of my work, and different techniques used.

Here is the story of the piece:

Tom Foolery’s Magic Pot of Gold

By Mike Ilkiw

Some time ago while walking in the park I got caught in a thunderstorm. Soon after it passed I continued my journey and saw a rainbow. I had been told that there was a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. I thought a pot of gold is nice, so I raced toward the end of the rainbow. Upon reaching the end of the rainbow there was a leprechaun dancing around his magic pot of gold. Leprechauns like to dance around their gold. I asked him his name and he told me Tom Foolery.

Tom was a wild little leprechaun, and had many tricks. He claimed his pot of gold was magic. I thought I would like his magic pot of gold for myself. As I reached to retrieve his pot of gold, it magically turned into a broken down maple tree. This broken down maple tree became the source for this piece. Since the magic pot of gold became the maple tree, perhaps I could try to reverse the process and make the broken down maple tree back to a magic pot of gold.

Well here is the end result with gold coins and all. But where is the magic?

Under the right conditions the magic does happen. Perhaps you will be in the right place at the right time to see the magic.

Tom says you have to be patient.

The above 18 photos are walnut, all cut from the same tree for the family that the tree belonged to, hence “The Family Tree”. The reference numbers from the top row down are 2014 – 571, 2014 – 572, 2014 – 576, 2014 – 575, 2014 – 578, 2014 – 584. The pieces ranged from 5 5/8″ – 7 3/8″ dia. x 2 3/4″ – 4 1/8″ tall. You will see great differences between one piece and the other, even though all the wood came from the same tree, were turned at the same time interval, sanded and finished the same way. This is what is so interesting in woodturning. Each one will be different. This set is sold.
